Hardware: 10" Newtonian + (unmodified) Philips ToUcam Pro webcam. Eyepiece projection using 17mm Plossl.

Capture: 106 seconds of video using software supplied with the webcam. Attached to a P2 366 laptop.

Video settings: 5 frames per sec., 1/25th sec exposure, gain set to minimum.

Processing: Selected and stacked best 100 frames using Registax and processed using Registax.

M42 by Adrian Jones

Hardware: 10" Newtonian + Philips Vesta Pro webcam (modified for long exposure). Prime focus + home-made focal reducer (binocular objective) yielding focal ratio of approx. f/3.

Capture: 11x 6-second exposures + 10 x dark-frames captured using AstroVideo software. Camera attached to a P2 366 laptop.

Video settings: Long exposure setting enabled; maximum gain.

Processing: 11 frames aligned, dark-frame subtracted and summed in AstroVideo. Levels and histogram adjustments in K3CCDTools.

Mercury
The innermost planet has its best morning apparition of 2008 in late October. Look for it low in the east before dawn, especially on the 27th October when a slender crescent Moon will be close by

Uranus & Neptune
The outer two planets are well placed for spotting during September and October. You can follow their daily movements using binoculars. Finder charts can be found at Sky & Telescope
